Why your business isn't showing on Google Maps (and how to fix it)

The most common reasons a business doesn't appear on Google Maps — from verification problems to weak profiles — and what to do about each one.

You search for your own business on Google Maps and… nothing. Or you only appear when you type your exact business name. It's frustrating, and it's one of the most common questions we get from local business owners.

The good news: there's almost always a fixable reason. Here are the usual suspects, roughly in the order we check them.

1. Your profile isn't verified (or verification is stuck)

An unverified Google Business Profile won't show up properly in search. Sign in at business.google.com and check its status. If it's pending, finish the verification steps Google asks for — that might be a video, a phone call or a postcard.

2. Your profile is suspended

Profiles get suspended for things like keyword-stuffed names, virtual office addresses or duplicate listings. If you see a suspension notice, fix the issue first, then request reinstatement through Google.

3. You're showing — just not for the searches you expect

This is the big one. If you appear when someone searches your business name but not for "deck builder thunder bay", your profile exists but isn't strong enough to rank for that search yet. That's a ranking problem, not a visibility problem, and it comes down to three things Google weighs:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search (categories, services, description).
  • Distance: how close you are to the person searching.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business looks (reviews, links, mentions across the web, your website).

You can't move your business, but you can improve relevance and prominence.

Quick test: search for your main service plus your town from a phone while you're near your location. Then try it from across town. Results change with distance — that's normal.

4. Your category is wrong or too broad

If your primary category is "Contractor" but people search for "fence installer", you'll struggle. Choose the most specific primary category for your core service, then add secondary categories for the rest.

5. Your name, address and phone don't match across the web

When your details differ between Google, your website, Facebook and directories (an old phone number here, "St." vs "Street" there), Google is less confident about your business. Clean them up so they match everywhere.

6. Your profile is thin

Missing hours, no photos, no services, a one-line description and two reviews from 2019 tell Google this business isn't very active. Fill in everything and keep it fresh. Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through it step by step.

7. Your website isn't backing it up

Your website is one of the biggest prominence signals. If it doesn't clearly mention your services and the areas you serve — or it's slow, outdated or missing basic SEO — your Maps ranking suffers too.

8. Duplicate listings

Two profiles for the same business split your reviews and confuse Google. Search for variations of your name and address, and request removal of duplicates.

The bottom line

Most "not showing on Maps" problems come down to a profile that isn't verified, isn't specific enough, or isn't backed up by a strong, consistent web presence. Fix those, and you give Google every reason to show you.
